Douglas Motorsport’s Luke Hilton is gearing up for his first single-seater racing campaign in the 2025 GB4 Championship, and the young Brit has been busy getting up to speed with his new challenge.
The Radical Cup graduate has decent circuit racing experience courtesy of his sports car exploits, and while the switch to single-seaters requires a different approach, he’s been making big progress in testing already.
“It’s been really good, we’ve made some mega improvements and development has been going well with the new car” he commented at last week’s Donington Park test day.
“There’s a lot more to come from myself and me, but the team have gelled really well which is really nice, that’s always good. But I’d say everything is going really well at the minute.
“Every day we’ve made a new step. We’ve worked really hard at the new car over the winter and made massive progress. We’re taking some big steps forward and I’m feeling really confident at the minute.”
Hilton has enjoyed good seat time in GB4’s new Tatuus MSV GB4-025 car already, and is looking forward to adapting to the new racing style required compared to the sports cars he’s used to.
“In a Radical you can have a bit of door bashing, but in this you have to have your wares about you a little bit more. It’s really competitive racing but you need your spatial awareness about, which is one of the main things. It’ll be a massive learning curve this year which I’m up for, it’s what I’ve been training hard for and I’m really looking forward to it.”
His move to GB4 allows him to reacquaint himself with a former karting teammate, and he’s hoping to have a battle at the front of the field.
“I’d say I’m most looking forward to racing against Daniel Guinchard. We used to be teammates in All Stars back in 2015-2016 so it’ll be good to be racing against him again, and it should be a good season this year.
“Ideally I’d like to be in the top three in as many races as possible. You can expect but you don’t know what the outcome is going to be. You can only do as much as you can, so if I can’t be in the top three, then the top-five. But we need to see how the rest of the grid stacks up and see what we can do against them.”
Hilton’s GB4 move wasn’t something he expected a few months ago, but a chance test in a single-seater allowed him to show his potential, and his career momentum quickly took another route.
“Initially when I went with Radicals we thought we were going to go down the Prototype route, but then we had a test day in an F4 and it went surprisingly well.
“We had some pace behind us so we thought we’d give single-seaters a crack and every time we’ve been out in a car we’ve made massive steps. Every day I’m feeling more at home with the car and I think it’s the right way forward.”
