Phelps takes early control of George Russell Pole Position Cup

07 April 2025

Elite Motorsport’s Isaac Phelps enjoyed a dream first qualifying session in GB4, securing both pole positions on offer in the season opening session at Donington Park to take the early lead of the George Russell Pole Position Cup.

The British driver’s best lap of 1m27.724s came right at the end of the 15-minute session on Saturday, after multiple drivers had taken turns at the top of the times, and with the top-20 split by little over a second in one of the closest single-seater qualifying sessions imaginable.

With race one pole secured at the last possible moment, his second quickest time for the race two grid was only 0.061s slower, meaning he also secured pole for the second contest.

With £150 and a trophy on offer for each pole position this year, Phelps walked away from Donington Park with £300 in prize money. He converted race one pole to victory in his first single-seater race, before taking second place in race two, staking his claim as a likely title contender this year.

"I might have to give the prize money to my parents" Phelps quipped at the end of the session. "I had to get some more sim equipment before this because something broke, so I might have to give it to them to pay them back!"

The driver with the most poles at the end of the season will win the George Russell Pole Position Cup and an additional prize of £1,000. The team of the driver with the most poles will win the David Poole Warren Pole Position Cup, and a further £1,000 prize.

Awards are presented at each round by John Cavill, who has played a major role in supporting drivers in MSV’s championships since 2013, and beyond that with many other contenders who have gone on to become leading names in the sport.
