Graham Brunton Racing’s Alex Berg led from start to finish as he ended his maiden weekend in GB4 with victory at Donington Park.
While the Canadian driver, son of ex-F1 racer Allen Berg, led the entire contest, he had to withstand massive pressure from Arden’s Leon Wilson, who was right behind him throughout until a late drama with Hillspeed’s Leandro Juncos on the penultimate lap.
That relieved the pressure on Berg, who was unchallenged on the final lap to win by a second from Douglas Motorsport’s Enzo Hallman, with Pace Performance’s Stefan Bostandjiev taking third.
Berg's victory means he has taken wins in F4 USA, British F4 and now GB4.
Berg made an ideal start from pole position while Wilson jumped to second from third by passing Fortec's Thomas Ingram Hill. From eighth meanwhile, Juncos had already made progress to sixth, and was up to fourth on the next tour, and began to close on the lead trio.
Ingram Hill was dispatched on lap five, as Juncos moved into the podium positions and instantly began to close on the lead duo of Berg and Wilson, who were separated by just half a second at the mid race point.
As Berg and Wilson continued to lap as one, that allowed Juncos to make it three for the lead by lap eight. Unable to find a way through, Juncos looked to repeat his successful Melbourne Hairpin moves from races one and two, challenging Wilson at the tight right hander on the penultimate lap. But the pair made contact mid corner, allowing Hallman through into second having started fourth and fallen as low as sixth, before picking off his rivals one by one. Bostandjiev completed the podium from seventh on the grid.
Dan Guinchard was feisty again for Hillspeed as he went from ninth to fourth ahead of race two winner Ary Bansal, the Elite Motorsport driver going from tenth to fifth.
His teammate Alex Kattoulas started sixth and finished sixth, but had dropped to tenth by lap five, while Douglas Motorsport's Luke Hilton seemed to be involved in pretty much every battle going and ended his first single-seater weekend with seventh place.
Wilson recovered to eighth after his late drama, ahead of Fortec duo Ingram Hill and Jack Taylor. Graham Brunton Racing's Callum Baxter was just half a second away from the top-10, while KMR Sport's Alex O'Grady made up another 13 places from 25th and last on the grid, meaning the Irishman gained 38 places across the three races this weekend!
Last corner drama saw Fortec's Luca Magnussen and ADM's Jason Pribyl crash out as the chequered flag was waved, with both drivers emerging unscathed.
After three dramatic races at Donington Park, Guinchard's solid run to fourth was enough to propel him to the lead of the championship standings, with early championship leader Isaac Phelps encountering early trouble and needing to pit to repair damage. The top-two are covered by two points at the head of the standings, with Kattoulas third and only six points further back.
