Mills soars to double pole at Brands Hatch

09 September 2023

On a weekend where he could wrap up the championship title a round early, KMR Sport’s Tom Mills made the perfect start to proceedings by claiming a double pole position in qualifying.

The 18-year-old almost eclipsed last year’s qualifying lap record with a 1m24.782s effort, which put him 0.166s clear of Fox Motorsport’s Liam McNeilly for the race one grid, and he also claimed pole for race two based on his second quickest lap time, putting him 0.358s of McNeilly again.

VRD Racing's Zack Ping, in just his second GB4 weekend was an impressive third quickest, and a tenth of a second ahead of Mills' nearest championship challenger Cooper Webster, who was fourth for Evans GP.

Colin Queen was the lead Fortec runner in fifth, a tenth clear of Elite's Josh Irfan, with KMR Sport's Jack Clifford eighth and the final driver within a second of the qualifying time.

Harry Burgoyne was only 1.004s away from the outright fastest time in eighth, 0.068s ahead of the second Fox Motorsport machine of Sid Smith, with Fortec's Aditya Kulkarni, who brought out a late red flag, completing the top-10.

Mills, McNeilly, Ping, Webster and Queen hold the same positions on the race two grid, with Burgoyne jumping up to sixth ahead of Irfan, Clifford, Smith and Evans GP's returnee Kai Daryanani.

The first race of the weekend is due to commence at 14.45.
