Ping targeting podiums at Donington Park season finale

04 October 2023

VRD Racing’s Zack Ping has now completed two race meetings in the GB4 Championship, and made big progress at Brands Hatch compared to his debut event at Silverstone.

Having qualified ninth at Silverstone and taken home a best result of tenth, Ping showed plenty of potential next time out as he placed his car third in qualifying at Brands Hatch, before going on to claim two top-six race results.

He admits that the format of the GB4 Championship has allowed him to quickly develop his skills.

“The series is really good honestly, I really appreciate all they’ve done to provide clean racing. It’s been really fun so far you know, we’ve made big steps since Silverstone to Brands and we’re looking to keep going forward.

“The job isn’t finished and we’re not satisfied, so our heads are down, we’re pushing hard and we’re looking forward to Donington.”

His results at Brands Hatch were all the more impressive considering that he had endured a big shunt in pre-event testing on the Grand Prix circuit the week beforehand. Unperturbed, on his next session on the full layout, he delivered a top-three qualifying result.

“Sometimes you have to go over the limit to find it, right?” he said. “So I kind of just sent it, went for it hoping for the best and I ended up P3 which was a really good job, and I’m proud of that. I can’t thank the team enough.”

Having proven he has the pace to challenge the top-three, he’s now looking to convert that in the final trio of races at Donington Park in October.

“Hopefully a podium, maybe even more, that’s what we’re really here for. We’re not here to come third or second, we’re here to win and that’s about it, so we’re looking forward to it.

“We’ve got a couple of test days, and I’m going to go back home to regroup, get some time at home in my bed where I can actually sleep! But we’re looking forward to this round, I can’t wait to race here.”

Having joined the series late, he’s also hoping to return full time next year to mount a title challenge.

“This is the plan for next year, aim for the championship and we’ll have to see how it goes and I’m looking forward to next year for sure.”
