McNeilly: “Anything can happen” in pursuit for runner-up spot

02 October 2023

Fox Motorsport’s Liam McNeilly heads to Donington Park with his sights set on challenging Cooper Webster for the runner-up position in the championship standings.

The British driver has two wins to his name so far, including one at Donington Park, but heads to the East Midlands venue on a rich vein of form that’s produced five consecutive podium finishes across events at Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

He’s 40 points behind Webster in the standings, but hopes that his current form can propel him to second place.

“Anything can happen” he says. “We’ve just got to keep beating him in the races pretty much and hopefully he has a bit of misfortune in one of them and we’re able to outscore him quite heavily. We just have to always be at the top of our game and pouncing on any opportunity we can get really.

“We’re on a run of form at the moment so hopefully we can get a win for one of the main races, that will really top off our season.

While second place in the standings is still his main aim, McNeilly would be satisfied to at least take third place on his and the Fox Motorsport team’s first season of single-seater racing, and is targeting a victory in either race one or two, with both his triumphs so far coming in reverse contests.

“If second doesn’t happen, then third is still a pretty good achievement considering the team is new and I’m new to slicks and wings. I’d love to get second but I really want to win to cap off the season.

“The two reverse grid wins get a bit overshadowed because they’re a reverse grid, so to win a race outright would be pretty mega, so I think that’s the aim coming into Donington.”

While McNeilly is looking to continue his career into a second season of single-seaters, either in GB4 or GB3, he’s keeping his options open and has made the final dozen of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior selection process.

“It’s a pretty good achievement, I’d love to get into the final four of that, it would be amazing. Any opportunity is really good in GB3 or GB4 again, or Porsche. Anything is on the cards really, but we’ll see what happens.”
