Formula One Esports champion Lucas Blakeley will make his slicks and wings racing debut in the GB4 Championship this weekend (17/18 June) at Snetterton with KMR Sport.
The 21-year-old Scotsman won the 2022 F1 Esports Series for McLaren, having been a front-runner for several campaigns before that. He was also the winner of the eROC title at the Race of Champions earlier this year in Sweden.
As well as being one of the world’s leading Esports competitors, Blakeley has also made a high-profile switch to real-world competition, notably beating F1 stars Valtteri Bottas, Mika Hakkinen and Sebastian Vettel in head-to-head contests in the past two Race of Champions events in Sweden.
In addition, he has also sampled circuit racing in Formula Ford, and was the runner-up in the Scottish Championship last year. He has since competed with KMR Sport at the Silverstone round of the United Formula Ford series, and then the Oulton Park event for the National Formula Ford Championship back in April.
Blakeley sampled slicks and wings machinery for the first time in GB4 testing with the team at Snetterton this week, and having made considerable progress across Thursday and Friday, will now make his debut in the series this weekend with backing from KMR’s sponsor SD Sealants.
Lucas Blakeley said: “I’m over the moon to be racing in GB4 this weekend, and with the reigning champions too! I’d never driven at Snetterton before this week, or stepped foot in a slicks and wings car, so it’s been a busy few days but with the help of KMR Sport, I’ve been able to get to grips with the car quickly. The heat this week has increased the challenge, but to say I’m excited is an understatement, and I really can’t wait to get going this weekend!”
Team Principal Kevin Mills said: “We’re really pleased to have found a way to get Lucas into our third car for this weekend. His record in both Esports and real world competition speaks for itself, and he’s a quick learner, the testing this week was purely meant to be for him to try out the car, but the way he has got up to speed has been really impressive, and all parties were keen to get him in our car for the rest of the event. Having impressed us in Formula Ford earlier this year, I’m sure he can do the same this weekend in GB4.”
