Race 2: Mills triumphs in rain affected second Oulton Park contest

10 April 2023

KMR Sport’s Tom Mills claimed his first GB4 race victory of the season in the second contest of the weekend, which was heavily disrupted by rain.

With heavy rain throughout the contest, the race was for large portions run under safety car, but Mills was able to master his restarts to claim victory by 2.246 seconds ahead of Fox Motorsport’s Liam McNeilly, who claimed his and the team’s first single-seater podium, with Elite’s Josh Irfan completing the podium in third, just a quarter of a second clear of teammate Harri Reynolds who took fourth from eighth on the grid.

Harry Burgoyne Jnr climbed from seventh to fifth ahead of KMR’s race-one winner Jeremy Fairbairn, who completed the top-six.

Fortec’s Aditya Kulkarni made up five places to take seventh ahead of privateer Dylan Hotchin, while Jason Conzo had an eventful race for Oldfield Motorsport having run towards the front early on, but brought his car home ninth while Jack Clifford completed the top-10.

Drama before the race came with a heavy rain shower, with two green flag laps necessitated as a result. Cooper Webster, who was due to start on the front row, pitted at the end of the first one of those with an issue, leaving Mills clear at the front when the race eventually started.

Mills took full advantage at the start, making a good start to lead the field down to Old Hall. McNeilly closed to within half a second at the end of the first racing lap, but the race was neutralised behind the safety car after Fortec’s Colin Queen crashed out at Druids.

The race resumed at the end of lap four, but the rain had intensified, and Fox’s Sid Smith was nudged out of the race at Old Hall, bringing out the safety car once more.

The race resumed with just a lap remaining, and Mills controlled it to take his first GB4 win of the year, and his third overall.

The final GB4 race of the weekend, the reverse grid contest, is due to commence at 17.05.
