Kevin Mills “can’t believe” team’s championship success

17 October 2022

Kevin Mills, Team Principal of his eponymous Kevin Mills Racing squad was left stunned by his squad’s success in the GB4 Championship finale at Donington, as the Gloucestershire outfit claimed the inaugural Team’s Championship title.

Heading into the event trailing Hillspeed by five points, KMR swept their rivals aside by winning all three races in the East Midlands, with Mills’ son Tom claiming his second victory of the season in race one, before Jarrod Waberski took the flag in both races on Sunday, landing him the runners-up spot in the championship as a result.

“I just can’t believe it, it’s amazing” Mills commented afterwards. “We moved up from Formula Ford to GB4 and we’d not run slicks and wings cars until this year. It’s been a really steep learning curve going up against amazing teams like Fortec, it’s been a really tough job.

“We just kept chipping away with two really good drivers who have learned all the way and both of them have won races. As each meeting has gone on, we’ve got faster and faster, and that’s led to us winning all three races this weekend. It’s amazing and with the team behind me, I can’t thank them all enough for their efforts.

Mills also had the unique feat of not only operating the team, but running his son in one of the cars too.

“It’s special but a bit more stressful! We’re really fortunate that SD Sealands and Investchem came onboard and got us onto the grid. Without their help, we wouldn’t be here, they’ve backed us so much. Any problems we had, we went back to them and they’ve been really helpful. The stress of father and son racing is sometimes not the best!”

And he also acknowledged the achievements of Waberski, who only received a visa to compete in the UK a few days before the start of the season, and Mills reckons he’s found a star of the future.

“It was two days before [the first round] the visa, he did no pre-season testing, turned up at Snetterton in the cold, had never driven the cars in March temperatures or in the rain, all the tracks were new, but you would never have known it. He turned up on the first session on Thursday and was on the pace immediately. To learn a track as quickly as that shows he is a special talent.”
